Vernacular Stretch album release concert at 7pm on December 21, 2025 at Soapbox Gallery in Brooklyn, NY – also will be live-streamed!

Vernacular Stretch is dedicated to the memory of Mark’s NEC Jazz Trumpet mentor, John McNeil. It features Mark’s original jazz compositions, plus a ballad by Henry Mancini.

Featuring Annalise Stalls (saxes & flute), Gabriel Nieves (saxes & flute), Mark Tipton (trumpet & flugelhorn), Joey Dies (trombone), Keegan Marshall-House (piano), Kai Lance (guitar), Daniel Mayer (bass), Caleb Montague (drums), and special guest vocalists Aviana Gedler and Pitiki Aliakai. (Brooklyn-based vocalist Nedelka Prescod will replace Aviana Gedler for the album release concert.)

The intricate compositions on Vernacular Stretch are scored for jazz septet and octet, and range from the rhapsodic “Paradoxical Dreams” to the contemplative “Lament for Glaciers,” and from the hip-hop-meets-progressive-jazz title track “Vernacular Stretch” to the funky “Galaxy Bird.” Vocal tunes include Mark’s gospel-tinged “Peace Invocation” and Henry Mancini’s “Moment to Moment.”

Vernacular Stretch will be released on streaming platforms on Friday, December 19 and as a double-CD album on December 21. Vernacular Stretch was self-produced by Mark through his company, Mark Tipton Music Productions, LLC.

Recorded by Todd Hutchison at Acadia Recording Co. in Portland, Maine, Mastered by Pat Keane at Pat Keane Audio Mastering, and featuring photography and artwork by Sophia Szokolay.

“Both the performances and the compositions on Vernacular Stretch are truly impressive. While the music remains largely inviting, a deeper kind of engagement is also being demanded from the listener. In the end, Mark strikes the right balance, weaving in unexpected flashes of ’60s psychedelia, a deeply moving rendition of Henry Mancini’s ‘Moment to Moment,’ and instances of beautiful vocal music, all along several ambitious, episodic long-form works.”
